Types of wedding dresses

The wedding dress is perhaps one of the important aspects for one of the stars of this great day, the bride. As little girls, women dream of that perfect dress that will make us look like fairytale princesses. When choosing the dress, the bride must take into account not only the setting or the theme of the wedding, but also the personality and the cut that best suits your body.

Do not let the purchase of the wedding dress be a torture for you, in fact these types of clothing help to enhance your attributes or hide those little parts that make you feel insecure. Thanks to this practical guide, you can take into account both your personal tastes, and what fits the best.

First of all, you should forget about the idea that the perfect wedding dress should be made from the latest collection of renowned designers. In mannequins and displays, a dress will seem perfect but in reality it does not complement your body’s proportion. There is also the possibility of that perfect wedding dress from Marchesa, Giorgio Armani, Vera Wang or Monique Lhuillier will not match the wedding theme. For these reasons, you should consider several steps BEFORE choosing the type of dress:

  1. The theme of the wedding: the first thing you should keep in mind is that your dress should harmonize with the wedding setting. For example, some themes such as outdoors or on the beach require that dresses should have certain specifications for greater comfort.

  2. Your personality: your wedding dress should reflect you and your personality. The simplest and most delicate brides usually buy dresses with embroidery to look more romantic; while bohemian brides prefer dresses with light fabrics and ornaments with flowers to give it a more hippie style; For their part, modern brides want to feel that their dress is at the forefront of fashion and they are not afraid to use asymmetrical or low cuts; And finally, we cannot forget to mention vintage brides who seek for dresses with Victorian style lace and designs that reflect the fashion of past decades.

  3. The color: choosing the color of the dress well is important because all skin tones do not match well with the pure white classic color. This tone is perfect for brides of dark complexion but you must realize that it is not widely used today. Other more popular options are the raw white that goes well with all skin tones, pearl that gives a more elegant and sober look to the dress, ivory that is preferred by brides of very white complexion, champagne that are perfect for brunettes and nude skin color that with embroidery or lace that gives a tattoo effect.

  4. The fabric: choosing high quality fabrics will allow you to enjoy your wedding without itching or bearing extra weight. The most commonly used types of fabrics are: tulle, lace, organza, chiffon, crepe, taffeta, brocade and mikado.

  5. The shape of your body: this is perhaps the main aspect to consider before choosing the ideal style for your figure. It is common for brides to go to bridal shops to try on dresses with a particular model in mind, but when they look in the mirror they end up choosing a totally different one. Avoid these surprises by first knowing what your body figure is:

  • Round or apple-shaped bodies: the weight is accumulated in the middle part of the body.

  • Triangle or pear shaped body: the lower part especially the hips are wider than the torso

  • Rectangular shaped body: they stand out for being flat with little bust and hips.

  • Hourglass body: known as the ideal shape because there is symmetry between the upper half and the lower half, and has a fitted waist.

  • Inverted triangle-shaped body: they are distinctive of athletic women with broad backs and less wide hips compared to shoulder width.

Taking into account the aspects mentioned above, it will be easier to decide the ideal criteria to choose the ideal type of dress for you. Usually the wedding dresses are divided into the following types:

Style A

This type of dress stands out for being tight in the bust and waist area, with a skirt that enlarges as it descends. It is ideal for women with an inverted triangle silhouette, hourglass or pear type. What these two types of bodies have in common is that they have a narrow back and wide hips. For this reason, dresses in line A help conceal wide hips utilizing a skirt that becomes increasingly wide. This type of dress specifically centers the attention on the bust and waist as two focal points, forming a figure that reflects an uppercase A.

The style A wedding dress is one of the most classic and the one that generally suits most women. This type of silhouette is also ideal for using a variety of fabrics, as well as designs on sleeves and bust cuts. Also, dresses in line A harmonize perfectly in outdoor weddings and sober or less formal style.

Mermaid style

This type of cut is regularly used for very elegant weddings. They are characterized by being fitted up to the knees, from where an increasingly wide skirt begins, simulating the tail of a mermaid. Previously, they were called dresses in trumpet court or Spanish court. They are suitable for very thin women but with good proportions, particularly highlighting a pronounced bust, flat stomach and narrow waist.

The latest trends in wedding dresses show that the favorite variations of mermaid cut type are when the back is fully uncovered. Also when the mermaid wedding dress is used in thick lace and long sleeves. In the same way, mermaid-cut designs can be given a more dramatic touch by adding over skirts that give it a feeling of greater breadth.

The mermaid-cut dress is not recommended for women with short stature, while women with inverted triangle bodies are advised to wear these types of dresses with simple designs in order not to turn the hips into a focal point of the dress. For the rest of the silhouettes, especially for the hourglass type, this type of wedding dress is a good option that never goes out of style.

If it is about personality, the mermaid cut marks the silhouette and highlights the curves to result in a sexy and flattering look for your body.

Princess style

Also known as Ball gown, princess-cut dresses are one of the favorite styles because they resemble wedding dresses from fairy tales. As the stories of our childhood tell us, for example, Cinderella used a beautiful white dress, fitted with large skirts on her wedding day with her Prince Charming. If you are a romantic bride, this type of dress is meant for you.

Generally, the ballgowns consist of fitted bodices and skirts with a lot of volume that detach from the hip, thus hiding wide hips. For this reason, they are perfect for women with curves, tall or pear-shaped body. However, this does not mean that they do not look good in other types of bodies. On the contrary, all shapes and genders help them to highlight their waist and look a few inches taller.

Mermaid dresses differ from dresses in Line A by having a more dramatic appearance, a tighter bodice and a more voluminous skirt. This will not stick to the body so it is very comfortable to walk and dance. Nowadays, skirts are made of fabrics such as tulle or gauze to reduce weight.

Empire style

Although they have a straight silhouette, empire-cut dresses are usually not tight when compared to styles such as mermaid. The Empire style stands out for having a low cut that starts at the chest, with a high waist and skirt that falls from there in a graceful way. In other words, it is not a dress that frames the waist, and therefore fits a specific type of body. For women with a small bust body or in a state of pregnancy, the empire style highlights the part of the bust. Even so, empire-style wedding dresses are very forgiving of other body types, especially for thin women with pear-shaped or square bodies.

Tube Style

Recently, tube style dresses stand out on the favorite types for brides, as they tend to show the female figure in all its splendor. It does not hide any defect and is characterized by lengthening the figure a few centimeters. Women of short stature will find the solution to their height problems in this type of dress. For confident women who are not afraid to show off their body, the tube style highlights accentuates this personality. It is also ideal for women with an hourglass or rectangle shaped bodies.

Short dresses

Although we are used to seeing brides in long princess dresses, there is no rule that prohibits dresses with short skirts. There are numerous women who select a short suit due to the type of wedding. For beach or outdoor weddings, for example, short dresses adjust to the weather. However, there are two special circumstances in which brides prefer to wear these types of dresses: first, short dresses are preferred for weddings in the town hall without reception; and in another place, they are the most used as secondary dresses during the reception. Wearing a short dress exclusively after the ceremony will allow you to move freely and enjoy without any restrictions of the party.

Short dresses usually have pompous skirts and finished with lace or rhinestones that are typical of vintage or bohemian weddings.
